The two premier middleweights in world boxing, unified IBF, IBO, WBA and WBC titleholder Gennady Golovkin and the Lineal titleholder Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez came face to face yesterday night.
It was the first time both combatants came face-to-face since their first fight in September 2017.
They came together for a press event in Los Angeles on Tuesday night. They came to promote their upcoming rematch, which takes place on the ‘Cinco De Mayo’ Mexican holiday on May 5th.
When pressed on the topic of fighting Golovkin at a non-Las Vegas venue and possibly at Madison Square Garden.
Canelo assured listeners that he has no fear of Golovkin and he promised his fans he will give the Ukranian knockout sensation a taste of his own medicine by putting him out cold.
“Look, you all know me – I’m gonna fight him anywhere,” Alvarez said through a translator. “I’m not afraid of nobody, and I’ve shown that.
The first time, they were saying he was gonna knock me out and I wouldn’t fight him. And look, here we are again.”
“I’m not afraid of him. I’m gonna knock him out.”
Canelo firmly believes his style is better suited to the rematch scenario because of his ability to adapt.
The Mexican superstar suggested that his counterpart does not have that ability in his locker.
“There’s a saying in Mexico – a parrot’s green anywhere he goes.”
Canelo also reiterated his belief that he was the rightful winner in the first fight and claims that ‘GGG’s renown punching power was nothing spectacular.
“I respect him,” Alvarez said. “He has a good punch, but nothing out of this world.”
“Without a doubt, I felt I won the first fight,” Alvarez said.
“But look, thank God we have this second fight … he felt he won, I felt I won. This second fight will erase all doubts when I win.”
Both men conducted themselves appropriately at the press event and there was no bad blood or tension.
Canelo said there is no need for all of that drama because the fans already know what this match-up promises.
“We don’t need to badmouth each other,” Alvarez said. “We don’t need to talk about each other, and all the pushing and shoving. We don’t need to sell it that way.”
“The fans know what we bring, that we both wanna knock each other out. Of course, we both want to win convincingly.”
“That’s why the fans know what we bring and that’s what we’re gonna do for this fight. I wanna knock him out.”
