Four weight world champion, Saul ‘Canelo’ Álvarez, believes that he will step back into the ring in May 2023 after a successful recovery from injury.
The Mexican had to endure surgery in order to help recover from a wrist injury that he had been carrying in his recent fights and was expected to be out of action until around September of next year.
However, in an interview with bet365, Canelo has revealed that the operation has been an overwhelming success and that we could now see him return within the next six months.
“The doctor at first had told me that I had to be four weeks with the cast without moving it after the surgery. When he came in and saw inside, everything I had and what he did to me, he said it was better than we expected, that I should only be in the cast for seven days, then remove the stitches and begin rehabilitation. I’ve been in rehab for two weeks now,”
“My scars have already closed, I’m doing therapy very well, so I don’t think it’s going to stop me that much,”
“My fights are always in May or September. I think I’ll be ready for May again”
Alvarez also announced that he intends to rematch Dmitry Bivol, who many believe to be the 2022 fighter of the year, after he became the first person to beat Canelo since Floyd Mayweather – an undefeated run which lasted almost nine years.
“The first half of the fight I did very well and then came the overwhelm because we didn’t do training as it should be, especially in a bigger division where you have to be carrying it more, they are heavier. That’s what we’ll be looking for, the rematch. If he don’t wants to fight, there are more things to do,”
Canelo has fought on the weekend of Cinco De Mayo in six of the last eight years, so we could well see the Bivol rematch, possibly for the undisputed super-middleweight titles, in early May.
However, Bivol has been clear in his desire to fight Artur Beterbiev for all four light-heavyweight belts, which could mean Álvarez must find an alternate opponent for his highly-anticipated return.
