Carl Froch isn’t a fan of the ‘stick’ Tyson Fury has been receiving from fans in response to a relatively inactive heavyweight division.
Following a win over Derek Chisora in an uncompetitive bout, Fury entered negotiations to put his WBC belt up against Oleksandr Usyk’s WBO, IBF and WBA titles.
The fight didn’t materialise, and left fans with a bitter taste no matter which side they blamed.
‘The Gypsy King’ is now in the market for an opponent, and has teased ‘huge news’ on numerous occasions, but an announcement remains elusive.
There’s a general feeling that frustrations from pundits and fans have been directed at the champion perhaps more so than in the past, and Froch addressed this in his latest video.
“He has been getting a lot of stick lately. He’s called out quite a few people, he’s not been boxing, the fight with Oleksandr Usyk never happened and people are blaming him.”
“I don’t like to see it, he’s a great champion. He beat Klitschko in Germany … Since then he’s had the trilogy with Deontay Wilder, the most feared man in boxing, the biggest puncher in the heavyweight division.”
Whilst the recent Hall of Famer concedes that Fury may not be helping his case by teasing announcements and taking negotiations public, he also believes that him being the ‘main man in the division’ paints a target on his back.
“He is maybe putting himself in the firing line by maybe talking too much … People are frustrated with the heavyweight division because there’s nothing really happening.”
“It’s all getting a bit tedious, and very annoying. I think Tyson Fury is getting a lot of the backlash because he’s got a lot to say and people just think he’s talking for the sake of talking now and nothing’s going to materialise.
Don’t forget, Tyson Fury is the main man in the division. He’s the man that’s led heavyweight boxing now for years, so don’t tune out of him, because, let’s be honest, put him in with any of the other heavyweights and you pretty much know what the results gonna be.
So he deserves respect – but he is annoying people.”
As of writing, Fury’s plan remains to fight in September in the UK before re-entering discussions with Usyk’s team to stage the undisputed bout in Saudi Arabia.
