Carl Froch has named, in his opinion, the biggest ‘hype job’ in the sport of boxing – and it’s based off a recent performance.
The former super middleweight champion, now hall-of-famer, was known for his grit and heart in the ring, getting victories over the line through sheer toughness on more than one occasion.
It’s perhaps not much of a surprise then that when asked via his YouTube channel to name the most over rated fighter, he choose Ryan Garcia – a man many think showed the exact opposite recently in his stoppage loss to Gervonta Davis.
“For me, it has to be Ryan Garcia. He went down from the body shot from Gervonta Davis and he stayed down. I know some people have been complaining saying ‘you can’t say that – people go down to a body shot and don’t get up.’
Garcia survived a knockdown in the second round, but a ‘Tank’ body shot in the seventh saw him take another count, this time unable to carry on. It’s been a hot topic in boxing as to whether or not he ‘quit.’
‘The Cobra’ believes he did, and that it must be said given the hype surrounding him.
Listen, if you’re building your way up to become a world champion, and you’re being hyped and dubbed as the next Oscar De La Hoya, you can’t take a body shot, wait until the ten count runs out and then jump up and start walking round like everything’s okay.”
“He got up and he could’ve carried on that fight, but he didn’t. That shows there’s something missing in that mind. He hasn’t got that toughness and self-belief and that desire to stay in there when it’s really tough as you need to do.”
The question was who’s the biggest hype job, and that has to be my answer. I think he’ll come again, but he’s got a lot to learn.”
Since the defeat, Garcia has split with his trainer, Joe Goossen, and returned to light training. He’s likely to make a move up to a more comfortable 140lb and continue his campaign there.
