It was announced yesterday that popular British heavyweight veteran Derek Chisora will be fighting Joe Joyce in the summer and Carl Froch has served up a huge warning for ‘Del Boy.’
Joyce and Chisora will be coming to blows in the ring on July 27, but there will be no belts on the line and neither man is really in their prime. They are both big hitters, and men who can be easily hit, which is what has got some onlookers concerned.
Joyce’s last bout was a less than impressive win over Kash Ali and was a first fight back since devastating back-to-back losses against Zhilei Zhang in 2023.
Chisora meanwhile managed to beat a similarly ageing Gerald Washington in what was the 47th fight of a gruelling career that has seen him take big losses to the likes of Tyson Fury three times, Dillian Whyte twice, Oleksandr Usyk and many others.
Both of these veteran Brits are looking to add one more win to their professional ledger, but some wonder if it is worth it.
Speaking to Lord Ping, former world champion Froch is one of those and claimed he has already seen enough of Chisora in the ring.
“I’m not interested in watching Derek Chisora fighting ever again. I can’t believe he’s still fighting to be honest. It’s at a stage now where it’s dangerous for him.
“Boxing’s already dangerous but now at this stage in his career, it’s really dangerous. He needs to take advice from people close to him and that advice should be ‘no more punches to the head’.”
Froch then explained that fighting on so late is never going to end well for any boxer no matter how fit they are.
“You can be fit and strong and have a healthy diet and deal with the traumas of fighting in your twenties and early thirties, but if you keep going and keep going for too long, you’re taking too many punches to the head and it can leave you with devastating ramifications. Brain damage and death happen in a boxing ring.”
It’s a sobering warning for Chisora who lives by the slogan ‘War Chisora’ and many fans hope this will be his last fight of a long and storied career.
