Former super-middleweight champion, Carl Froch, has labeled one of boxing’s current superstars as an ‘absolute monster’ following a recent performance that left ‘The Cobra’ purring.
Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis knocked out fellow American star, Ryan Garcia, in the seventh-round of their much-anticipated contest last month, dealing the youngster a subtle body shot from which he was unable to recover.
The win took the 28-year-olds record to 29 wins in as many fights with 27 coming by way of knockout.
On his YouTube show, Froch on Fighting, the former world champion was clearly impressed with the Baltimore-born lightweight – who is possibly now the biggest draw in the sport, despite not holding a full world title.
“Gervonta Davis is an absolute monster, he dropped him in round two and Garcia got up and carried on, fair play to him for that, but to go down and stay down, after that body shot, for me, is not good enough.
Gervonta Davis, let’s be honest, absolute quality fighter, who’s had probably ten or eleven world title fights back-to-back, just an unbelievable, talented, aggressive fighter.”
“Do you think, if Gervonta Davis took a body shot, he would have gone down and stayed down? I don’t think so. That is the difference between the two fighters, one of them is a world champion who believes in himself, he has got that mindset, that tough, gritty determination to never quit. Most of Gervonta Davis’ friends are either in prison or dead, when you have got that mindset, you ain’t going to stay down to a body shot.”
Davis is undoubtedly one of the hottest properties in the sport and with so much talent in 135lb division, plenty more big nights lie ahead for the American knockout artist.
