Former super-middleweight champion Carl Froch has offered his thoughts on last Saturday night’s shocking upset that saw Ryan Garcia dominate Devin Haney and put an end to his undefeated record.
Garcia’s strange antics during the build-up to the bout had many people believing that he was in no fit state to fight. However, those same fans were left with mouths agape as ‘King Ry’ landed his trademark left-hook at will and scored three knockdowns against the WBC super-lightweight champion, on the way to a majority-decision win.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Froch had little empathy for Haney despite the widespread opinion that Garcia coming in three pounds overweight played a significant factor in the outcome of the contest.
“He was landing that left-hook – ‘boom’ onto the chin of Haney – Haney didn’t know what was happening, he didn’t know where to go or what to do. He was ducking low, trying to get refuge and save himself but maybe Devin Haney is not the fighter that we thought he was.
“Maybe, at 140lbs, giving away three pounds and then however much on the night [had an effect] – I don’t think that Ryan Garcia looked like a middleweight like Eddie Hearn alluded to, but he did look bigger on the night.
“But they were the rules and he has paid his fine, three pounds too heavy and then he has gone in there he has put a whooping up Devin Haney. So, nobody can complain, it is what it is.”
Talk of a rematch is well underway, but Garcia’s revelation that he is moving up to 147lbs means that any such showdown would have to take place at welterweight, with Haney likely being forced to vacate his world title which he retained by default last weekend.
