Keyshawn Davis has addressed the growing conversation around his career trajectory. He acknowledged the difficulty of landing major fights while drawing inspiration from Shakur Stevenson.
The unbeaten lightweight prospect has been widely viewed as one of the division’s rising stars. Still, like many fighters in a similar position, he has faced challenges in securing bouts against top-level opponents.
During a recent interview with FightHype, Davis was asked about the shrinking list of opponents willing to face him, a situation that has become increasingly common for him.
Rather than expressing frustration, Davis offered a measured response. He explained that he understands the position he is currently in.
Keyshawn Davis uses Stevenson as blueprint
To explain his mindset, Davis pointed to Stevenson’s journey, which he faced earlier in his career.
“I’m going to use Shakur’s example,” Davis said.
“About two years ago, everybody was saying he was a boring fighter and nobody wanted to fight him and he wasn’t able to get a big fight.”
Davis highlighted how Stevenson stayed consistent despite criticism and a lack of opportunities.
“As he stayed focused and kept training and kept getting fights, he eventually fell into a big fight, which was Teofimo [Lopez], and fought for 20,000 fans.”
Stevenon squared off against Lopez at Madison Square Garden in January and secured a unanimous decision victory to capture the WBO world super lightweight title.
Davis’ focus remains on performances and knockouts
Davis made it clear that his approach is simple, continue winning and making statements in the ring.
“All I got to do is keep going out here and stopping guys,” he said.
He believes that consistent performances will eventually force top fighters to accept the challenge.
“Somebody gonna be brave enough to be like, ‘Alright, it’s time for me to give this guy a chance.’”
The 27-year-old’s comments reflect a broader reality in boxing, where high-risk, low-reward fighters often struggle to secure elite opposition early in their careers.
However, his reference to Stevenson suggests confidence that the situation can change with time and continued success.
‘The Businessmen’ is now set to face Nahir Albright in a rematch on May 16 at Scope Arena in Norfolk.
Back in 2023, in the first episode of the back-and-forth battle, Davis secured a majority decision victory. However, it was overruled by the Texas commission as a no-contest.
For now, Davis remains focused on building his résumé and staying active, trusting that bigger opportunities will follow.
If his trajectory mirrors Stevenson’s, it may only be a matter of time before he finds himself in the kind of marquee fight he is aiming for.
