Isaac Chamberlain is backing ‘The Bronze Bomber’ Deontay Wilder to return to boxing.
The 28-year-old has been a training partner of the American in the past and is confident we have not seen the last of the former WBC Heavyweight champion.
Chamberlain spoke to Sky Sports News during the build-up to his own big fight against European Cruiserweight champion Chris Billam-Smith on Saturday night.
When asked if he thought Wilder, who has been the subject of retirement speculation in recent months, would fight again he replied:
“One million per cent.”
“You need characters like that in boxing, he’ll be back.”
Wilder has been out of the ring since losing his epic trilogy fight with Tyson Fury in Las Vegas last October.
Since then, the 36-year-old has been enjoying his time away from boxing, but recent rumours suggest he could come back to the sport later this year.
His legendary power, which has put paid to 41 of his 45 opponents and had Fury down three times in their series, is something that Chamberlain has felt himself.
At just 19 Chamberlain sparred the Alabama slammer and can testify to how powerful Wilder really is.
“He’s powerful, very powerful. I remember I sparred him when I was 19, he hit me with an uppercut, I thought I was back in London.”
“People always say it’s his power. It’s not really, it’s his speed. He’s very quick off the mark and he processes very quickly. People don’t realise it and people only think he’s wild just in general.”
Wilder has in the past lacked the finesse of someone like Fury and has been known to be reckless during moments in the ring, but Chamberlain has an explanation for that.
“He’s only wild when he has you hurt. But he sticks to the basics very well, he’s very, very sharp. So, he’s better than what people think.”
“There’s method behind the madness.”
