Following on from her career-best victory over Katie Taylor, Chantelle Cameron seems poised for a rematch with the Irish hero due to a clause agreed in their contract.
However, although her team are happy to fulfil their obligation, her trainer has one suggestion that he believes ‘Il Capo’ deserves.
Cameron played the role of party-pooper as she became the first woman to defeat Taylor in the professional ring, spoiling the homecoming of the iconic 36-year-old with a unanimous decision win.
The performance marked a first successful defence of Cameron’s undisputed super-lightweight crown, just six months after she overcame Jessica McCaskill in Dubai to become the queen of the 140lb division.
Now, Cameron’s fame has skyrocketed, putting an end to Taylor’s twenty-two fight undefeated record.
The Northampton-born champion now has her eyes on further greatness as she and her team eye up Taylor’s undisputed lightweight title, trainer Jamie Moore told Seconds Out.
“We had to ringwalk first, we had to be announced first, we accepted all the conditions just to make sure that this fight happened.”
“I understand that people want to see the rematch, I think people deserve to see a rematch of a fight like that, because I think that it was a great fight to watch.
“I think that Chantelle deserves the opportunity to be a two-weight world champion. If the rematch is going to happen, and Katie’s got that in the rematch [clause] as Chantelle is obligated to fight her, Chantelle should say ‘okay, but it’s at lightweight, because I want to fight for your titles now’.”
The 135lb scene will be a familiar one for Cameron, who has fought at the weight in half of her eighteen professional contests.
However, it remains to be seen if Taylor is willing to risk her championship status, in order to avenge the lone blemish on the record of her career.
