Most observers view undisputed light middleweight champion Jermell Charlo has a sizeable underdog going into his fight with Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez next month – however a man who has faced both believes he can pull it off.
Charlo will move up two weight classes to challenge for Alvarez’ undisputed middleweight crown on September 30th at the T-Mobile Arena, the first time two reigning undisputed champions have locked horns in the four belt era.
And in a recent interview, Austin Trout explained to KO Artist Sports just exactly why he believes ‘Iron Man’ can overturn the bookmakers’ odds against the iconic Mexican next month.
“I think Charlo should be busy. Don’t worry about Canelo’s size is my opinion, I think Charlo is the bigger man naturally. Even though he’s coming up in weight, I think that’s going to be a benefit to him as he’s been sucking down to get to 154lbs.”
“In my experience of both men, I walked Canelo down and I was on the back foot against Charlo. Charlo was definitely the stronger man at 154lbs, I had to try and outbox him; I couldn’t walk him down and brawl him.”
“I think Charlo can pull off the upset, especially thinking about their recent performances. Charlo has looked good in his last three fights, Canelo has not.”
As Trout alluded to, Canelo is coming off three less than vintage performances against Dmitri Bivol, Gennadiy Golovkin and John Ryder, and there is a view that he is a fighter on the decline.
That said, there could be no better time for Charlo to face the Guadalajara native and score a win that would sent shockwaves through the boxing world.
