Derek Chisora barged his way into a live Anthony Joshua interview and joked he should ‘tell the truth’ about his training.
Joshua is preparing to face Jermaine Franklin this weekend in his first return to the ring since his rematch loss to Oleksandr Usyk last August.
During a media scrum for the fight, Joshua was asked about being treated like ‘a celebrity’ at the boxing gym. Joshua was bemused by the question and replied:
“Like a celebrity? In a stinky boxing gym? Imagine going into the gym on a red carpet, I wish.”
At that moment Chisora gatecrashed the interview and joked that AJ should tell the truth.
“Yes you do [get treated like a celebrity]. Yes you do! They wipe your face, tie your shoes for you.
Stop lying, tell people the truth bro! Whatever he’s telling you he’s lying. They carry his bags for him, they tie his laces for him, the only thing they don’t do for him is help him shower.”
Joshua will be making his comeback with his third trainer in as many fights. The Brit split from long term coach Robert McCracken after the first Usyk defeat and employed the services of Robert Garcia for the rematch. Garcia suffered a similar fate when they weren’t able to regain the titles from the Ukrainian.
Joshua will now face Franklin under the guidance of American trainer Derrick James, with fans hoping he can bring out the aggressive style that made the former heavyweight champion such a destructive force in the division.
From reports online it certainly doesn’t seem like James has rolled out the red carpet for Joshua, with Eddie Hearn saying training has gone back to basics with no data analysis or sports scientists on hand to advise.
