Four-weight world champion Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez is intent on a rematch with old rival Juan Francisco Estrada.
Eight years ago, the two giants of the smaller weight divisions met for Gonzalez’s WBA light-flyweight crown in Los Angeles with the Nicaraguan maestro prevailing on the scorecards. A rematch has been touted ever since, but seems more likely now with both men holding world titles at super-flyweight.
WBA 115lbs champion Gonzalez (49-2, 41 KOs) flew from Nicaragua to Coachella, California, to commence training this week with both rivals likely to need a bout to shake off the Covid-19 enforced ring rust before any unification.
“We’re starting camp, we’re happy and we’re aiming for a fight in September,” Gonzalez’s manager Carlos Blandon told Espn.com.
“We want to beat the best ‘Gallo’ Estrada, so we want him to tune-up as much as possible.”
Gonzalez, 33, rolled back the years with a majestic ninth-round stoppage of Kal Yafai to win the WBA crown in Texas in February. Mexican Estrada (40-3, 27 KOs) holds the division’s WBC belt after avenging a previous loss to Srisaket Sor Rungvisai, who holds two victories over Gonzalez, on the cards in April 2019.
