Chris Eubank Jr and Roy Jones Jr have expanded their team ahead of a second fight with Liam Smith in June.
Eubank was served the first stoppage loss of his career in Manchester back in January – a victory that upset the odds and plunged his boxing future into doubt.
After resisting the temptation of a mega-money fight with Conor Benn, the 33-year-old activated his rematch clause and set the wheels in motion for what is an extremely decisive fight at the tail end of his career.
Four-weight world champion, Roy Jones Jr, remains the head honcho in the corner, but has revealed to ProBox TV that they’ve welcomed David Haye into the mix.
“It’s a bit of motivation for Chris. David Haye is a former world champion, so he’s a person who’s experienced it all and understands and knows the tools, and two heads are better than one.”
As for what the two-weight champ brings to the table, Jones believes there’s plenty – a trained eye, communication and intellect.
“When you got somebody that already understands and knows, it’s good to have him around – especially if they’re good friends, because what David does is David sometimes reminds you of the things that you’re not doing that you should be doing.
He’s more close to your age [at 42], so y’all can communicate a little bit better and a little bit different than I can. I’m from a whole different era. You understand where I’m coming from?
He brings awesome experience to the table. He has the eye; he has a very high IQ; he’s a much more intellectual person than I knew him to be ‘cause I got to know him better. Much more intellectual than I knew before.”
Whether the addition will be enough to put a dent in a confident Liam Smith remains to be seen.
The Liverpudlian fan-favourite will enter the ring riding high on his January stoppage, and history tells us that immediate rematches tend to sway towards repeat rather than revenge.
