For weeks now there has been widespread speculation that a fight between Chris Eubank Jr and Conor Benn has been in the making.
Journalist Gareth A. Davies was originally the first to confirm that the teams were in talks and even went as far as to say that the deal was done and the fight had been sealed, and we now have official confirmation that the fight is on!
Eddie Hearn, Benn’s promoter, had played down the rumours about the fight in interviews, saying that their key target has always been Keith Thurman as they look to build towards a world title shot.
However, all that talk seems to have been a ploy to try and throw everyone off the scent.
Broadcaster DAZN and promoters Matchroom and Wasserman have now issued an official press release to say the fight is on!
The Chris Eubank Jr vs Conor Benn Confirmed Details:
- DATE: The fight will take place on Saturday, October 8.
- VENUE: It will be held at the O2 Arena in London.
- WEIGHT: Both men will need to come in at a catchweight, although not confirmed it’s rumoured a weight of 157lbs has been agreed.
- BROADCASTER: The fight will be streamed live on DAZN pay-per-view but price details have yet to be announced. DAZN is currently £7.99/month for a subscription.
A key question about the potential bout was what weight it would be made at, Benn is a natural Welterweight whilst Eubank Jr competes within the Middleweight division. It was rumoured the delay around the announcement was caused by a dispute over a rehydration clause.
The details of what catchweight the two will compete at has still yet to be disclosed, but rumours circulating is that the fight could take place at 157lbs.
As widely reported the two will battle it out on October 8 at the O2 arena in London.
Chris Jr will be looking to get another win for his family name against the Benn’s after his father stopped his arch-rival Nigel in 1990 for the WBO Middleweight title. Three years later at Old Trafford the two men fought out their Super-Middleweight title unification, a far less engrossing bout, which ended in a split draw despite each man believing they had won.
There has been no information yet on how or when tickets will become available for the event, but one thing is for sure, they will surely be in high demand.
