Eddie Hearn has provided another update regarding the resumption of Conor Benn’s career with moves being made already.
A recent ruling from the WBC cleared Benn to return to their rankings and fight in bouts sanctioned by them, however the 26 year old is currently without a British Boxing Board of Control license.
There has been heavy speculation that, unable to fight in Britain, Benn’s comeback bout will take place on one of Matchroom’s international cards.
And Hearn confirmed to The Guardian that talks were underway with various foreign commissions about potentially licensing ‘The Destroyer.’
“We’ve spoken to a number of commissions about moving forward with licensing Conor, but have not made any official applications yet.”
“I will only look to get him licensed in countries that have some relevance. For example, it’s very likely his next fight will be in America, so we move forward with an American commission. Also his family live in Australia, and he spends a great amount of time there, so Australia could be an option.”
“I’m not going to Luxembourg or somewhere that doesn’t have relevance to his career. There have been preliminary talks with [US] commissions about a month ago.”
The promoter provided a timeline for progress.
“I believe our legal team may have had a conversation with Nevada. I honestly don’t know. But we also have calls scheduled with the British Boxing Board of Control [BBBoC] to discuss the issue. Ultimately he will be licensed in the next couple of weeks.”
Following the WBC’s statement last week, the British Board confirmed their own internal investigation into Benn’s case was still ongoing and unaffected by the sanctioning body’s findings.
The legendary Manny Pacquiao looks to be the favourite for Benn’s comeback bout, with Hearn stating in recent interviews that discussions were taking place with the 44 year old’s team.
‘Pac-Man’s manager Sean Gibbons confirmed the eight-weight world champion is back in training and is keen to return to the ring, having not boxed since his 2021 world title defeat to Yordenis Ugas.
