Conor Benn has given his take on Ryan Garcia and the manner in which he lost to Gervonta Davis.
Garcia took on ‘Tank’ in Las Vegas recently in – an event that delivered on the hype in a financial sense but wasn’t as close in terms of talent as many predicted it might be.
After being knocked down from a headshot in the second round, Garcia fought tentatively until he decided to have another go at swarming Davis in the seventh. That time around it was a short hook to the ribcage that dropped him, and he wouldn’t be getting back up to fight.
On one knee, he watched the referee count him out – and that’s largely why the debate of ‘quitting’ has come around.
Speaking to Fight Hub TV, Benn said that it wouldn’t be him going out like that.
“It’s hard, man, because you’re asking someone who’s been brought up and seen his dad go to wards. Watching my dad fights, he went to war, always. Got put down, got back up.
If it was me, I’d get back up. All day long. You’re gonna have to knock me out cold. Go out my shield. I’m not scared of getting knocked out, it’s part of the game – some days you win some days you lose. I feel like you’ve gotta get up from a body shot man.”
Benn went on to say that because Garcia didn’t look hurt, many are branding him the way they are.
“It wasn’t like you were crippled on the floor. You didn’t feel like you were dying. Why I feel like people have got the hump is he managed to just get up after 11 and have a little walk around.”
In the ring after the contest, Garcia spoke to his trainer and revealed that the shot had landed on the spot of a previous injury.
