Conor Benn has cast doubt on the second fight between Chris Eubank Jr and Liam Smith.
The pair are set to run it back on July 1 following a Smith stoppage victory back in January and Eubank subsequently activating his contractual rematch clause.
It was unclear as to whether this would be the route Eubank would take. He was linked with a mega-money bout in the Middle East with Benn following the cancellation of their bout last October when news that Benn had failed a doping test broke.
Initially set for June 17, the rematch – due to take place at the AO Arena in Manchester – was pushed back by two weeks due to an undisclosed injury on Smith’s part.
Eubank’s promoter has since expressed confusion at the postponement, believing that standard practice hadn’t been followed. This was refuted by Smith.
Speaking to Boxing Social, Benn said that he has heard the July fight won’t be going ahead, referencing a conversation with Smith himself.
“I think I’ve heard that it’s not happening. Quite strange. I spoke to [Liam] Smith and he didn’t sound too confident in it happening.”
Benn then addressed the potential of him facing Eubank instead, as well as listing all of the names he believes he could be in with sometime soon.
“The reality is, I’ll fight anyone. I’ve got options. You’ve got Kell Brook calling me out. You’ve got Pacquiao calling me out. You’ve got Chris Eubank wanting the fight, Liam Smith wanting the fight.
Yeah I’ve got to go up to 154, but I believe I carry my power up to super middle. It doesn’t really concern me. I’ll fight either one of them any day of the week.”
If the Eubank fight is revisited, Benn believes it will be a quick night at the office.
“It don’t go past four rounds.”
As of writing, tickets are on sale and there has been no indication from either side of the promotion that it might be pulled from the schedule.
