Kazakhstan’s Daniyar Yeleussinov hopes to become an even bigger name in his native country than Gennady Golovkin with the help of Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Boxing.
It’s almost too obvious who the biggest boxing star is in Kazakhstan but Yeleussinov believes he can rival and better Golovkin once given the right opportunity.
“Golovkin is well known in Kazakhstan and when people say Kazakhstan, they all say ‘GGG'” Yeleussinov said to Sky Sports.
“That is one of my goals too. When people say Kazakhstan, I want them to say my name.
“Golovkin has opened the doors for all the boxers in my country and we all dream of following suit,” he continued.
The 27-year-old known as the ‘Kazakh Thunder’ put his name and country on the map by winning gold at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Combine that with his excellent amateur career and gold medal-winning performance at the 2013 Almaty World championships, you have yourself a skilled ambitious fighter.
“But I have my own way and I would like to be more than that. My dream is to be the undisputed, undefeated, champion of the world.
“I want to firstly make my country famous, that’s my first goal and if everything goes smoothly, I want to be here for a long time. I love this sport and love my job,” told Yeleussinov.
The Kazakh welterweight made his professional debut in April which he convincingly won in the third round. On June 6 he’s looking to put on another impressive performance against Gabor Gorbics at York Hall. In the near future, we might see him against the likes of Josh Kelly and other big UK names.
“Josh Kelly is in the same boat as me, we are like a team now with the same promoter, but If the fans want to see that fight in the future, of course it will happen.
“I am very interested to box in the UK, I want people to know me there and all over the world, the UK, USA, Europe, everywhere. I like England and like the people, they are very friendly.”
