Dave Allen has hit out at the recently announced price increase for DAZN, and admits he has made the decision to cancel his subscription for the streaming service.
It was announced yesterday that DAZN would be raising the cost of a monthly subscription to £20 per month, with cheaper options available for longer team packages.
And in an interview with SecondsOut, ‘The White Rhino’ stated the price point was difficult to justify in the current economic climate.
“I wouldn’t pay £20 a month for DAZN. I do still think Eddie Hearn’s the best promoter in the world, he’s brilliant and he can sell anything.
But, in the last twelve months, Matchroom have been pretty poor in the UK in my opinion. I don’t stay up to the early hours to watch American boxing, so we’ve cancelled it [DAZN].
We’re in a cost of living crisis now and £20 a month to watch boxing on a specialised boxing channel? You ain’t going to get many subscribers.”
News of the price increase came alongside that of DAZN’s schedule for the first part of 2023, which included Anthony Joshua vs Jermaine Franklin, Joe Cordina vs Shavkatdzhon Rakhimov and Katie Taylor vs Amanda Serrano 2.
Critics of the move have cited DAZN’s schedule in the UK in particular as being undeserving of such a jump in cost, especially given the increasing prevalence of “crossover boxing” on the platform.
However, it was also announced that Joshua vs Franklin would not be on pay per view, the first time that can be said for an ‘AJ’ fight since he boxed Gary Cornish all the way back in 2015.
