David Haye has weighed in with some advice for Anthony Joshua regarding the possibility of him fighting Tyson Fury next.
Fury’s name inevitably came up after Joshua’s successful comeback fight against Jermaine Franklin on Saturday night, after Eddie Hearn had admitted pre fight that talks were underway with Fury’s promotional team.
Haye, however, advised Joshua to stay clear of ‘The Gypsy King’ for the time being, and encouraged him to look at a rematch with old foe Dillian Whyte instead.
Speaking to iFL TV, Haye said:
“I want to see him in with Dillian next. That’s not the performance to go in against Tyson Fury next. If he went out and blitzed him in a couple of rounds, then okay.”
“But he needs a better performance than that to go in against Tyson, in my opinion. I’d like to see him against Dillian, where we know it’s going to be fireworks.”
“That’s a high profile fight that’ll get everyone’s juices flowing, then the winner of that can look at Fury. But Fury’s looking at fighting Usyk anyway – or is he?”
Whyte was working as part of the DAZN broadcast team, and a rematch appears to the earlier frontrunner for Joshua’s next outing.
Although ‘AJ’ was victorious via unanimous decision at the 02 this past weekend, many came away from the contest with more questions than answers, mainly regarding a perceived lack of aggression from the former unified world heavyweight champion
The Franklin fight was Joshua’s first outing under new trainer Derrick James, and there is a hope amongst Joshua’s backers that further improvements will be visible after he has spent a prolonged period of time working with James in Texas.
