David Haye says he will continue training and maintain his fighting weight, despite a freak bicep tear in training which ruled him out of a rematch with Tony Bellew.
The ‘Hayemaker’ has suffered a string of injuries throughout his career, including a ruptured Achilles in his first fight against Liverpool’s ‘Bomber,’ and the latest setback means he will have to wait to exert immediate revenge.
“It’s been eight days since my operation on my left bicep and the rehabilitation phase is well under way,” Haye said.
“All very steady, all very slow, all very boring, all very monotonous but it has to be done this way to get the results that I require.
“I’m going to try and stay under 100 kilos over Christmas, which isn’t always that easy but that’s my target.”
Arch-rival Tony Bellew has stated that he will continue to remain active, and says he will not wait for Haye if he cannot prove his fitness.
The Liverpudlian has also recently voiced his desire to fight lineal heavyweight champion Tyson Fury in another heavyweight blockbuster, but his promoter Eddie Hearn has said an on-going drug case involving the ‘Gypsy King’ means the Haye rematch is still favourite to take place next.
“We can’t plan a fight with someone who has a UKAD hearing, and has to go in front of the British Boxing Board of Control,” Hearn told Sky Sports.
“My plan for Tony Bellew is to beat David Haye then fight Tyson Fury. By the time he beats Haye, the Fury [anti-doping hearing] situation may be in the clear.”
