The boxing world waits with bated breath and worry as Aidos Yerbossynuly, a super middleweight from Kazakhstan, remains in a coma following his main event fight on Saturday night.
Yerbossynuly was facing David Morrell Jr on the SHOWTIME card in Minnesota.
The previously undefeated fighter was challenging for Morrell’s WBA Regular belt in the 168lb division, and was fighting in the States for the third time as a professional. Following a sustained beating and knockout, the fighter was taken Hennepin County Medical Center with bleeding on the brain and placed in a medically induced coma.
Outside of Yerbossynuly’s family and friends, one man who has to process the injury is his opponent. Morrell Jr’s tweets roughly translate as follows:
“It’s a great moment for me but at the same time super hard for others. Let’s pray for a super fast recoveryā€¨ and put on Aidos. God bless you and be with you”
“Aidos, you’ll still be in my prayers and God allows the recovery to be faster in the time that you’re in the hospital recovering.”
Morrell, a Cuban prospect who is highly-touted, stopped Yerbossynuly in the twelfth round, with referee Tony Weeks waving it off without a count when the Kazakh fighter his the canvas for the second time. It had been a punishing fight for the challenger, who, on two scorecards, hadn’t won a round. When Yerbossynuly struggled to keep his balance, Morrell and Weeks helped him back to his corner.
The champion’s messages come amongst many in the sport sending their thoughts, wishes, and prayers to the 30-year-old fighters and his family. Once again, the Boxing Social team send our wishes to Aidos and his family.
