Following a week which saw George Kambosos defy the odds and dethrone unified lightweight champion Teofimo Lopez, Baltimore star Gervonta Davis says he won’t be taking the threat of replacement opponent Isaac Cruz lightly on Sunday night in Los Angeles.
Davis defends his WBA Regular lightweight title Mexico’s Cruz at the Staples Center, and says he is fully aware of how big a risk overlooking his foe would be.
“I can’t say exactly what’s going to happen in the fight because that would be overlooking him,” Davis said. “I’m not going to make the mistake other fighters have made. I’m ready to go 12 rounds and I’m looking forward to Sunday.
“He’s saying I haven’t faced someone like him, but he’s never faced anyone like me either. He can say what he wants to build up the fight.
“I’ve been the underdog like Cruz before. I know that he’s coming fully prepared and coming strong. I remember when my back was against the wall. It’s do-or-die right now and he’s coming with it, not only for himself, but for his family.”
