Former WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder is set for a return as he sets out to prove that his time at the peak of the division has come to an end. However, one British prospect – who also spars Anthony Joshua, believes that the American is trying to cash out.
Wilder entered a match-up with Joseph Parker having competed in just one round in two years, that being a first-round blowout of Robert Helenius, but was promised a shot at Joshua should he come through the challenge.
Unfortunately for ‘The Bronze Bomber’ and fans around the globe, it wasn’t to be, and Wilder was out-boxed, out-thought and quite simply schooled by the New Zealander.
Rather than walk away from the sport aged 38-years-old, Wilder has instead opted to take on the ‘most unwanted heavyweight’ on the planet in a battle between the arguable two hardest punchers in the sport.
However, Matty Harris (6-1) remained unimpressed by that decision and told Boxing Social that he believes the bout is nothing more than a cash grab, especially considering Wilder’s comments towards Eddie Hearn in the past.
“Zhang [is going to win]. Only because Wilder doesn’t really look like himself, I feel like he is just trying to cash out.
“He said that never in a million years would he sign with Eddie Hearn and now that he has signed with Eddie Hearn, I just think that he is trying to make a bit of dough and disappear.”
Wilder will captain Team Matchroom in their five versus five battle with Queensberry Promotions on the Artur Beterbiev vs. Dmitry Bivol undercard on June 1st in Saudi Arabia.
Other match-ups on the five versus five sees Daniel Dubois meet Filip Hrgovic, Ray Ford defend his WBA featherweight title against Nick Ball, Hamzah Sheeraz clash with Ammo Williams, and Willy Hutchinson take on Craig Richards.
