Last night saw Andy Ruiz Jr defeat Luis Ortiz via unanimous decision, with the winner hyped to face PBC stablemate, Deontay Wilder, in the near future.
Ruiz dropped Ortiz three times on his way to victory. He took some heavy punches along the way too, but seemed relatively untroubled throughout. Wilder fuelled rumours of facing the victor by stepping through the ropes post-fight and giving FOX Sports his thoughts on the action.
“This is what all the fans came to see – a magnificent fight and that’s exactly what these guys gave you.”
“I always have love for Ortiz because we shared the ring and what we’re doing for our daughters, and the situation that we were in. I’ll always have love for him. Andy came with a game plan and it seemed like he executed the game plan. Much to love to him and I wish nothing but the best for him moving forward.”
A somewhat reserved ‘Bronze Bomber’, but after the broadcast he resumed the confidence and swagger he’s known for. Speaking to Fight Hub TV, he reiterated that he was open to a fight with Ruiz, as well as any other heavyweight who might want some.
“My interest level [on a fight with Ruiz]? I mean, I’m on a ten for whoever, whatever, whenever. Deontay Wilder is back and I don’t duck no fights. I always want the most exciting fights and if that’s the next exciting fight, after I handle business, then so be, let it be.”
“I’m willing, ready and able. They all know that. Everybody in the heavyweight division knows what Deontay Wilder brings. I’m willing to die for what I believe in – and that’s what I bring to the table. So, with that being said, I’m ready to go. They fear me, I don’t fear them, and that’s the difference.”
On paper, Wilder – Ruiz should be easy to make as both are with PBC. The Mexican fighter is now freed up for his next challenge and, if Wilder is victorious on his outing, there are no promoter disputes standing in the way.
As for what ‘The Bronze Bomber’ brings to the table, we’ll be reminded of that when he faces Robert Helenius on October 15. It’s no gimme fight, so talk of a meeting with Ruiz must be put on ice for now.
