British heavyweight veteran Derek Chisora silenced his doubters as he rolled back the years to defeat countryman and former WBO interim champion Joe Joyce on Saturday night to remind and warn the division of his presence. With two further fights planned for ‘Del Boy’ after the victory, his former trainer named the man whom he believes Chisora should take on next.
Most fans assumed and wholeheartedly believed that Chisora should have hung up the gloves following his one-sided defeat to Tyson Fury back in 2022, but Chisora refused to walk away from the sport and instead laboured to a win over Gerald Washington eight months later – further convincing viewers that his time was up despite getting his hand raised.
It was then announced that ‘Del Boy’ would face Joyce in an all-British showdown, much to the discontent of many fight fans, regardless of the allure that their clash of styles resulted in.
To the amazement of many, Chisora scored a jaw-dropping knockdown in the penultimate round of the contest which ultimately proved to be the deciding factor on his way to a unanimous-decision win and already fans have begun to speculate who the now 40-year-old could face next.
With his heart set on a return to the ring in Manchester this December, Chisora’s former trainer Dave Coldwell told Boxing Social that he would like to see Britain’s cult hero revisit an old rival and take on Dillian Whyte in a trilogy affair.
“I think that, [considering] where they both are at in their careers, if they are going to carry on then why not?
“Del is going to carry on, I just want him to be safe but he is going to carry on, he is going to get hit again and he is going to get hit whether it is against someone at a low level or at a higher level.
“I think a Dillian Whyte – perhaps so. That would still sell in Manchester, at the stages that they’re at, it’s not a case of Del having one win and him being in with a world title shot – he [Whyte] is a long way away from a title shot as well.
“There is a lot of history there and everything and I know that there is a lot more respect between them both now, but when the bell goes, they are both going to come out gun-slinging. That is another fight where you are going to watch it through your hands, if they are going to fight again then why not fight each other.”
Whyte has gotten the better of Chisora on both occasions that they met during 2016 and 2018 but a positive drugs test has seen Whyte seemingly frozen out of the heavyweight picture.
‘The Bodysnatcher’ has now made his return in a below-the-radar contest against Christian Hammer in Castlebar – winning by third-round knockout, although he still finds himself unranked across all four sanctioning bodies.
