Undisputed lightweight Champion Devin Haney has had his say on the rumoured fight between Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis and Ryan Garcia, and he believes one of them has “the edge”.
The lightweight division is full of match ups that fans are begging for – perhaps the biggest of which being Davis and Garcia finally taking the talking off Twitter and into the ring.
Speaking to Seconds Out ahead of his rematch with George Kambosos on Saturday night, Haney gave his take on that fight and although most within the sport have made Davis the favourite the young American thinks otherwise:
“I think it’s a good fight, Ryan is huge, much bigger than Tank, so it depends on what weight [the fight is at]. I just give Ryan the edge a little bit, because he’s big, strong and faster but Tank has that one punch, the game changer and Ryan hasn’t shown the best chin. So, I don’t know, it’s a good fight though.”
For now, Haney’s attention will be on his rematch with Kambosos, but if the fight between ‘Tank’ and Garcia does happen, he will undoubtedly have his eye on it.
It seems that Haney’s next opponent will likely be Vasily Lomachenko or the winner of the Tank-Garcia fight, but the American stated that he won’t stay at lightweight forever and, although he intends to defend the belts for as long as he can, he will eventually move up to the 140lb division.
This weekend Haney is in Australia to fight Kambosos Jr in a rematch after a convincing victory in their first fight. The fight will be broadcast on Sky Sports for UK viewers, with ring walks expected around 3:30am.
