WBC super-lightweight champion Devin Haney rightfully feels wronged following news of Ryan Garcia’s positive drugs test and now ‘The Dream’ has made his feeling known on whether he would like the opportunity to face his foe once again and seek revenge.
Garcia’s behaviour during the build-up made headlines and raised concerns amongst boxing fans who felt that he may not be fit to fight, following footage of him smoking marijuana, faking his own death and turning up to the weigh-in with a ‘beer’ in hand – before scaling overweight and losing the chance to win Haney’s world title.
Yet, on fight night, Garcia shocked the world with a one-sided beatdown over the previously undefeated champion, scoring three knockdowns over a man who had never been dropped as a professional.
However, recent reports have thrown the result of the career-best win into doubt, with Garcia testing positive for Ostarine – meaning that the fight could possibly be overturned and made into a no-contest.
Speaking to ESPN, Devin Haney made his feelings on the news clear, before ruling out a possible rematch with ‘King Ry’ after seeing what type of character he is.
“Of course [he is denying it]. Whoever got caught doping and admitted it? I think that would have been the first in history.”
“I have never been overmatched like that and I have been in with the best fighters in world. So, I felt like something was up, but I didn’t want to make any excuses or be that guy at the end of the day, so I put it in Allah’s hands and said ‘you know what, he was the better man that night’ and I went back to the drawing board to try and figure out what is next.
“I can sit here and say that things would have went differently but it’s a reality. I want to be on an even playing field, no matter if the other guy is better than me or not. It is only fair that, when we step into that ring, we are equal. Especially in boxing, it is a brutal sport, we put our lives on the line, I could have lost my life in that ring, that’s the reality.”
“Honestly, I am not too interested in it [the rematch]. During the build-up, we seen a lot of interesting things from him, we have seen his character, we have seen him cheat, we have seen the type of person that he is. I don’t see myself ever getting back into the ring [with him].”
The career-defining verdict for Ryan Garcia is currently pending investigation from the NYSAC, as Devin Haney ponders whether his undefeated will be reinstated.
