Frank Warren hopes that his young heavyweight star Daniel Dubois can fight for a WBA heavyweight title in 2021.
Dubois, 23, returns to the ring this Saturday against Bogdan Dinu on BT Sport and will challenge the Romanian for the vacant WBA Interim title. Dubois, currently ranked 11 with the World Boxing Association, will make a sizeable leap in the rankings should he win against the number two contender.
Sky Sports asked Warren if Dubois (15-1, 14 KOs) could receive an opportunity to challenge for the WBA title this year. “We very much hope so,” Warren answered.
Anthony Joshua currently holds the ‘Super’ title with the WBA while Trevor Bryan is the owner of the less significant ‘World’ version.
Dubois is expected to win this weekend and all eyes will be on how he performs since recovering from a broken orbital socket in his first career loss to Joe Joyce last November. And for the first time in his career Dubois will be without Martin Bowers as his trainer. Shane McGuigan teamed up with ‘DDD’ recently and is now tasked with rebuilding Dubois into the force he once was and a genuine world title contender.
