Respected boxing manager Cameron Dunkin believes he has a superstar fighter on his hands in Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis.
Dunkin knows a thing or two about talented boxers having steered the careers of Terence Crawford, Nonito Donaire, Tim Bradley, Johnny Tapia and Kelly Pavlik amongst others.
But, in Philadelphia welterweight sensation Ennis (26-0, 24 KOs), Dunkin believes he has a fighter who can surpass those fine names.
“I had Crawford for 20 something fights, so I know him very well. I know all these guys. I think Jaron, who is barely 23-years-old, is going to be tremendous, a great fighter. Pound-for-pound the best in the world, I really believe it,” Dunkin told Sky Sports.
“Terence, when I signed him, he was a tremendous 135lber. He was little and we grew him into a welterweight. Boots is a fully-fledged welterweight, who is much bigger, stronger, faster and hits harder.”
Ennis became the first man to stop tough Dominican Juan Carlos Abreu nine days ago – his sixteenth straight stoppage – and it now appears a case of when, rather than if, he hits the big time. Welterweight rivals are already giving Ennis a wide berth.
“These people aren’t stupid. They know a pound-for-pound guy and they know that he may be the best welterweight in the world, which I think he is,” continued Dunkin.
“I always said, I’d never signed a [Floyd] Mayweather, a [Oscar] De La Hoya. That kind of a guy.
“And now I have that kind of a guy.”
