Matchroom Promoter, Eddie Hearn, believes both the British Boxing Board of Control and Conor Benn, whom he promotes, have ‘lost the plot.’
Benn and the BBBofC have been entangled in a public row since the 26-year-old tested positive for Clomiphene in two drugs tests ahead of his fight against Chris Eubank Jr last year.
Since then, Benn has not renewed his British license and spent vast sums of money in an attempt to clear his name, having vehemently denied any wrong doing from the offset. The issue for Benn and his promoter is that, without a British license, he can’t fight in the UK.
Instead, Hearn told Boxing UK that Benn will box overseas in June and said that he believes both his fighter and the board are out of sorts, but remained hopeful that the matter can be resolved in the near future.
“The British Boxing Board of Control, right now, have got no jurisdiction over Conor Benn, he is not a licence holder. However, we want him to fight in the U.K.
The BBBofC have lost the plot, in my opinion, so has Conor Benn. So, we need to try and get them together, calm down, and talk a way through this, but Conor Benn will box internationally in June and hopefully his fight after that can be in Britain.”
Benn has confirmed the news of his return to the ring in Abu Dhabi on June 3, but an opponent is yet to be announced.
Recent talk suggests the likely man in the opposing corner will be Chris Eubank Jr, who activated a rematch clause with Liam Smith but hasn’t taken any further steps to make the second fight happen.
Two other fighters in contention to face ‘The Destroyer’ on his comeback are Kell Brook and Manny Pacquiao.
