Promoter Eddie Hearn has spoken of Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s hatred for rival Gennady Golovkin, ahead of what looks to set be the final instalment of their historic trilogy.
In an interview with Boxing Social’s Ali Drew, Hearn told of the genuine dislike that Canelo has for his counterpart, which seems to have grown since their second fight. However, the Matchroom promoter also mentioned the role that emotion could play in this fight and how he doesn’t believe his fighter will be able to put his feelings about Golovkin to one side.
“Canelo told me he is sick of the face-offs because when he looks at him [Golovkin] he wants to rip his head off.
I’ve not seen him like this before. I think he will want to control his emotions because Triple G [Golovkin] will want him to fight off his emotions, he will want him to be reckless. But I think he will be reckless. I don’t think he will take a step back in this fight and neither will Gennady Golovkin. That’s why I think this will be the best of the three [fights] yet.”
Having lost for just the second time in his career in his last fight against Dmitry Bivol, Canelo needs no motivation to get back to winning ways as he aspires to build upon his legacy. However, the added incentive of fighting his fierce rival, Golovkin, will only add to the will and desire to win on Saturday night.
Hearn commented on his Alvarez’s ambitions to show he is as good as, if not better than, he was before he suffered defeat to Bivol.
“Coming off a defeat, a lot of people will be questioning him, and he will be looking to make a statement. I think they both believe that physically they are in for a war on Saturday night, and they are preparing themselves for battle.”
Saul Alvarez fights Gennady Golovkin in Las Vegas on Saturday night with ring-walks expected to take place at 11pm ET in the US which is 4am Sunday for UK fans.
