Matchroom Promoter, Eddie Hearn, has offered more information regarding a potential scrap between Gervonta Davis and British welterweight Conor Benn.
Benn bounced back from an eighteen-month lay-off with a win over Rodolfo Orozco in September, but fans were left disappointed that he was unable to stop the Mexican. This past weekend, Benn went the distance with Peter Dobson, another opponent he was expected to stop.
This sparked criticism from ‘Tank’ Davis and opened the door for a potential clash between the duo, which Hearn has delved into during an interview with Matchroom Boxing.
“Those two [Davis and Benn] are going back and forth, and I have now spoken to Gervonta personally and he will be receiving an offer from us today for that fight. I think that it is a huge fight, could happen in the United Kingdom but we are looking more [for it to happen] in America for that. You have got two fiery characters, Gervonta is an outstanding fighter, a super-featherweight really coming up to lightweight and 140lbs but he’s never boxed at 147lbs and he is a really tough fight for Conor Benn.”
“Gervonta is a pound-for-pound great, but I like the size advantage in that fight, it will be the first time for a couple of fights that Benn will be fighting someone smaller than him, but he [Tank] can really crack and he is an outstanding fighter so it’s a big ask for Conor.”
“He [Davis] will be getting our offer today, I’m sure he will probably publicise that offer, as he does on Instagram, but we want to try and make that fight and Conor is bang up for it.”
“April or May, something like that.”
Davis has also been linked to a variety of clashes at super-lightweight.
