Talk of a fantasy fight between undisputed world champions Terence Crawford and Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez has gained traction over the past few weeks, despite the fact there are currently three weight divisions between the pair.
Crawford has stated he would be willing to make the huge jump up to super middleweight to take on Alvarez, who holds all four world titles at the weight class.
Promoter Eddie Hearn, who has worked with Canelo on the majority of his recent fights, has weighed in with a prediction for the potential match up – and he doesn’t hold out any hope for the Nebraska man.
Hearn explained to ESBR Boxing that the Mexican was “just too big” and that a clash between him and Crawford would be a “mismatch in size.”
“He [Canelo] would never come below 168lbs so it would have to be at 168, and I don’t think Crawford would go to 168. And I don’t think he could compete with Canelo.”
“You’ve got to remember, Canelo is going to come in at 180. It would be a mismatch in size. As good as Terence Crawford is, one; I can’t see it happening and two; him winning that fight.”
“He’s just too big for Terence Crawford.”
Despite the hype surrounding a potential super fight between the pair on social media, both have more pressing issues at hand and do not look likely to cross paths any time soon.
Canelo will face undisputed super welterweight champion Jermell Charlo on September 30, with Charlo jumping up two weight classes for the fight.
Crawford’s next outing will likely be a rematch with Errol Spence Jr, who looks set to trigger a contractual rematch clause after his one sided loss to ‘Bud’ last month.
