Matchroom promoter, Eddie Hearn, has removed himself from influencer boxing after being involved in one of the biggest fights of its kind.
Hearn promoted the rematch between Logan Paul and KSI back in 2019, which, by all reports, was extremely successful. Since then the level of interest in influencer boxing has only increased with the rise of Jake Paul and the founding of KSI’s Misfits Boxing promotion.
Misfits and DAZN recently announced a historic five-year partnership where regular influencer boxing cards – labelled the ‘X Series’ – would be appearing on the streaming service.
Ahead of ‘X Series 005’ an announcement of a tag team boxing match took things a step further, and divided opinions amongst fans, with many traditionalists hating it while others saw it as fun.
When quizzed on the outlandish bout in an interview with Boxing Social, Hearn joked that he can’t criticise the fight due his own partnership with DAZN.
However, the 43-year-old did point out that fights such as these separate the influencer boxing world from the true sport, and that this is how the traditional boxing fans should look at these events.
“Yeah, I don’t know really. I can’t criticise it because it is on DAZN and it does good numbers.
Look, I think what they [Misfits] have done is taken it to a level now, where you say, ‘it is just a laugh’. I have said that it is not boxing, let’s just move away from that, I don’t think they want to be ‘boxing’.
They are not trying to say, ‘this is championship boxing, this is sport’, this is just entertainment.”
The match will be an intriguing one to say the least and it is unclear if this will be a regular feature on the Misfits events or if this is just a one-off bout to help promote the card.
