Matchroom Promoter, Eddie Hearn, has made his prediction ahead of this Saturday’s undisputed lightweight title bout between Devin Haney and Vasiliy Lomachenko.
Haney had been signed with Hearn and Matchroom until March of last year, but moved to Top Rank to help secure a fight with George Kambosos Jr for all four lightweight titles.
After picking up a comfortable decision win in Australia, Haney once again travelled ‘down under’ to defend his new crown in the rematch, where the outcome was almost identical.
Now, Haney takes on ‘Loma’, who was considered a pound-for-pound superstar just a couple of years ago, but a loss to Teofimo Lopez has knocked the Ukrainian off his pedestal at the top of the sport, and left him with a point to prove.
In an interview with Boxing Social, Hearn favoured his former fighter, picking the youth of Haney to overcome the experienced Lomachenko.
“I think Devin wins the fight, by unanimous decision.”
Hearn went on to admit his interest in re-signing Haney, with fights against the likes of Gervonta Davis and Shakur Stevenson there to be made down the line.
“We would, of course, be interested in welcoming him back to the Matchroom team.
If you said to Devin, ‘you can be with any promotional company in the world, money aside, who would it be?’, he would pick us all day long.
The deal has got to work for us and we need to see how many buys their pay-per-view fight does this weekend.”
Haney could however leave the lightweight division, regardless of the result at the weekend, after struggling to make the 135lb weight limit in the past. At super-lightweight, there would still be massive fights on offer for ‘The Dream’, with Ryan Garcia, Teofimo Lopez and Josh Taylor campaigning in the division.
