Eddie Hearn appears to be confident that the freshly announced rematch between Anthony Joshua and Dillian Whyte is going to generate some big pay per view sales – though fan response on social media would indicate otherwise.
Eyebrows have been raised at the £26.99 pricing of the show on DAZN PPV, especially given that Joshua’s last outing against Jermaine Franklin was available as part of users’ regular subscriptions.
In a recent interview with IFL TV, Hearn defended the pricing and claimed Joshua vs Whyte 2 could do as many as 800,000 buys.
“This is going to do hundreds of thousands of buys, it’s a massive fight for DAZN. I think It does anywhere between 500,000 and 800,000 buys, something like that.”
“It’s an absolute monster, this fight. You wait until they come face to face at the presser next week, it’s a huge fight.”
Despite Hearn’s bullishness about the potential success of the event, the initial response to the pricing from boxing fans has not been overly positive.
When asked by Boxing Social on Twitter would they be buying the pay per view, a lot respondents indicated they would be sitting this one out.
“Not at that price, no world title on the line. If it was Joshua v Wilder/Fury then fair enough.”
“Nope will watch it for free on youtube the day after, I ain’t giving these two a payday.”
“Bought an annual subscription on the basis we wouldn’t be paying for any ppv. No, I will not be buying it.”
Joshua vs Whyte 2 will take place at the 02 Arena in London on August 12th.
