In the middle of fight week, following Wednesday’s April 29 public workout at the MGM Grand, Eddy Reynoso provided a clear update on his team, focusing on the preparation of Jaime Munguía who will challenge for a WBA super middleweight world title on May 2 at T-Mobile Arena and on the current condition of Saúl Álvarez ahead of his scheduled return in September.
Speaking to media during the open workout, Reynoso emphasized the ongoing importance of Cinco de Mayo week as a global showcase for Mexican boxing talent in Las Vegas.
“I’m happy that these Mexican dates continue to be represented by Mexican fighters, and that Mexican talent comes here to Las Vegas to showcase itself,” Reynoso said.
Munguía is set to face Armando Reséndiz in the co-main event of a card headlined by David Benavidez against Gilberto Ramirez. It will mark Munguía’s second bout under Reynoso’s guidance, with the trainer stressing the gradual but steady progress made during camp.
“We’ve been working step by step in this second camp. We’ve adjusted well, and Jaime has been understanding what we want to implement,” Reynoso explained.
Reynoso also highlighted Munguía’s discipline as a key factor in the process.
“He’s a very disciplined fighter, and we expect him to show everything he’s learned this Saturday.”
Regarding Álvarez, Reynoso confirmed the Mexican star will be ringside on May 2 in support of the team, while continuing his own training camp.
According to Reynoso, Álvarez has already logged several weeks of focused work both physically and technically with the aim of returning in peak condition for his September 12 bout in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
As for potential opponents, Reynoso mentioned Christian Mbilli, Hamzah Sheeraz and Lester Martínez as names under consideration, with Mbilli currently among the options drawing the most interest, according to comments made to ESPN KnockOut’s Chava Rodríguez.
With Munguía positioned in a significant title opportunity and Álvarez moving toward another high profile international outing, Reynoso’s camp remains firmly in focus during one of boxing’s most important weeks.
