The IBF world welterweight champion, Errol Spence Jr (22-0) faced the media while speaking at a press conference at Brooklyn’s Barclays arena, prior to Showtime’s Jr Middleweight World Championship triple-header on Saturday night. The hot topic that everyone wanted answers to, was if and when Spence plans to unify with the WBA & WBC champion, Keith ‘One Time’ Thurman (28-0).
Keith Thurman who was also present at the press conference stated his view that he feels Errol represents “great competition” and it is a fight he expects to happen “within one to two years.” Errol ‘The Truth’ Spence however, seems more eager for the matchup to happen sooner rather than later.
Spence Jr went on to share “Since I was 15-0, I said I would fight Keith Thurman or anybody in the top five. Like he said, he’s gotta wait until he get ready and gotta go through rehab. But I’m ready when he is. I’m always ready. So it don’t matter if it’s the first quarter or it’s second quarter [of 2018] or if it’s [the] next year, you know, I’m gonna be ready.”
“I’m always ready to fight the best,” Spence further elaborated. “I have a goal. I have a dream to be the undisputed welterweight champion of the world and I’m not gonna let anybody stop me from that path. So this is the fight that I’ve been wanting with Keith Thurman for the longest. Spence went on to ridicule Thurman for avoiding the matchup in the past and sounded a clear warning stating his intention to wait and find out what Thurman is going to do, explaining “he’s been making excuses. Said that I haven’t proven myself, I ain’t win a world title, said he was gonna bust my bubble. So, I mean, I’m waiting to find out what he’s gonna do.”
