Kalle Sauerland, promoter of Chris Eubank Jr, has revealed his plans as Eubank and his team look to move on from the disastrous collapse of the his fight with Conor Benn.
In an interview with Boxing Social, Sauerland indicated that Eubank has no intention of waiting for the conclusion of Benn’s ongoing investigation before announcing his next fight.
The 33-year-old is eager to get back in the ring and, although he would love the Benn fight, he isn’t going to let it halt his career. Junior is more than willing to move on to look for a more concrete opponent.
“He wants to be out tomorrow, in fact, he wants to be out this afternoon. That’s what he does, that’s how he thinks, he is a competitor, second-to-none that I’ve worked with. He’s just got a way about him, he takes it all in his stride and he’s done that since I first worked with him at the World Boxing Super Series. It’s never really even about the opponent, it’s just the way it is. Obviously, the [Conor] Benn fight was a much more personal thing, but other than that it’s just business and he wants to fight.”
“We’ve got the ongoing situation from the other [Benn] side, which obviously is a developing situation, it’s something I can’t comment on because I don’t have any information, other than what you guys have. That’s their business, which affects our business, so I can’t let that drag on, I have to look also at what options we have and lucky there are lots.”
One name that has always been on the end of Eubank Jr’s tongue is the legendary Gennady Golovkin, who showed signs of deterioration in his recent fight against Saul ‘Canelo’ Álvarez.
The Kazakh still holds the WBO middleweight title and a fight with Eubank would give the Brit his first shot at a belt since losing to George Groves in February 2018.
“We’ve spoken to Golovkin’s people before the last few fights.”
“I know his lawyer very well and we know the right lines to speak to them on and certainly that’s one that I think is interesting for every side for next year. We are not going to hide from that one.”
It appears that ‘Triple G’ is the man that Eubank and Sauerland are targting, but they will both know the dangers that he possesses, having brutally knocked out Kell Brook in his only previous fight on British soil. With that said, and despite Golovkin’s age, it’s likely a fight fans will get behind.
