Former two-division world champion, Evander Holyfield, has named the fighter he believes to be the best current boxer on the planet
Holyfield was comfortably the number one cruiserweight on the scene during the late 1980’s, winning a world title in just his twelfth fight and knocking every opponent out in his five title defences.
The last of those was against Carlos de León, where Holyfield won the WBC belt to become the undisputed champion, having defeating Ricky Parkey for the IBF title twelve months prior.
Having cleaned out the division, ‘The Real Deal’ stepped up to heavyweight and became the first person to become undisputed at both there and at cruiserweight, defeating Buster Douglas for all three belts, eight months after Douglas pulled off his famous upset victory against Mike Tyson.
In an interview ESNEWS, it perhaps came as no surprise that Holyfield chose a heavyweight, Tyson Fury, as the greatest current boxer, with Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis being the pick of the bunch amongst the ‘little guys’.
“With me, I would say Tyson Fury, until you beat him [you can’t argue with that].
I think with the little guys like ‘Tank’ Davis, the guys who, when you see them fight, they win. They win all of the time, they just win, so who can you compare them to?”
Despite the label of being the best ‘active’ fighter on the planet, Fury’s recent inactivity as a champion isn’t ideal.
Fans wants to see him fight – especially against Oleksandr Usyk for the undisputed heavyweight title, either in Saudi Arabia at the end of the year or elsewhere.
For his part, Usyk looks to become the first person to match Holyfield’s achievements in the cruiserweight and heavyweight divisions.
