If it makes money, it makes sense.
But on top of a massive pay day, Floyd is also putting his name, reputation, and most of all – his boxing record on the line.
In the midst of trying to get the win against Conor McGregor, ‘Pretty Boy’ Floyd is trying to break Rocky Marciano’s legendary record. They are both tied at 49 wins and zero losses. Mayweather’s plan is to surpass the American boxing legend but there’s always the question of what if?
During a media conference call yesterday, Mayweather talked about the risks of taking a fight like this.
“When a fighter has lost before, if he loses again they say ‘oh, it’s nothing, he’s lost before. But when a fighter has been dominating for 20-some years and never lost, everything is on the line. My legacy. My boxing record. Everything is on the line,” commented Mayweather according to Sky Sports.
But Mayweather is not concerned about losing because he simply doesn’t see himself as a loser. He’s taking a risk that he feels is worth it.
Every day I tell myself I am a winner. I was born to be a winner at life. Not just in the ring but I was born to be a winner. It’s all about taking risk. I wouldn’t be where I’m at if I didn’t take risks so I don’t mind putting a 49-0 record on the line, putting everything on the line for this fight. I feel like it’s worth it,” he said.
How will the 41-year old Mayweather prevail against a sharp, athletic, young knockout artist from Ireland? Floyd knows he isn’t the same fighter that he once was but there is one thing that will give him the clear advantage over McGregor
“I don’t think that I’m the same Floyd Mayweather that I was 21 years ago,” he said. “Of course not. I don’t think that I’m the same Floyd Mayweather that I was 10 years ago. I’m not even the same Floyd Mayweather that I was I was five or two years ago. But I still have a high IQ in that ring. And experience wise, it leans towards me, period, because I have been in the ring at such a high level for so long,” told Mayweather.
Mayweather and McGregor will meet in just nine days at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
