Floyd Mayweather has never been a man short of confidence, be it when he was in the ring as a fighter or in pushing the stars of tomorrow as a promoter.
Gervonta Davis is by far and away Mayweather’s most successful protege, though ‘TBE’ believes his latest charge will go just as far as ‘Tank.’
17 year old amateur standout Curmel Moton made his professional debut on Saturday night on the undercard of Saul ‘Canelo’ Alavrez vs Jermell Charlo, dispatching of Ezequiel Flores in less than a round at the T-Mobile Arena.
Speaking to the press after Moton’s impressive showing, Mayweather was not reluctant to compare him to Baltimore puncher Davis.
“This is no different to other young fighters I said would go on to be great someday – just like Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis.
He was in the same shoes that you [Moton] were in, and they didn’t believe in him. But it happened, and then all the jealousy came. I’m proud of you.”
Mayweather gathered some attention the way of Moton earlier this year, when he claimed the teen would beat WBA featherweight world champion Leigh Wood it the pair were to lock horns in 2023.
Unfortunately for Moton and those backing him, the fight did not take place until after Alvarez vs Charlo due to scheduling issues, meaning it was not televised and the arena had mostly emptied by the time the young virtuoso was in the ring.
Regardless, through clips leaked on social media, it looked to be an encouraging start to a career that is brimming with promise.
