Floyd Mayweather has taken a pop at former opponent Canelo Alvarez, by stating he believes the Mexican is ducking super middleweight contender David Benavidez.
Mayweather and Canelo locked horns all the way back in 2013, with ‘TBE’ proving to be too good for the then 23 year old and boxing his way to a decision victory.
Since that night a decade ago, Canelo has established himself as arguably the biggest star in the sport and currently holds all four world titles at 168lbs.
However, in a clip shared by FighterIQ, Mayweather claimed that his one time foe was hiding from a fight with the unbeaten Benavidez.
“We keep on saying we want to see Canelo vs Benavidez. Canelo’s a hell of a fighter, but in my personal opinion, he’s ducking Benavidez.
This is my personal opinion and I’m allowed to speak my mind. That’s just what it is. We want to see Benavidez – let’s make it happen.”
With Canelo just signing a three fight deal with Al Haymon’s PBC, a fight with Benavidez seems locked in for some point over the next 18 months, despite Mayweather’s accusations.
The four weight world champion had worked with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom for the majority of his recent fights, however has jumped ship after Hearn himself admitted he didn’t have any fights to offer the 33 year old after talks for a rematch with Dmitri Bivol collapsed.
WBC middleweight champion Jermall Charlo looks set to be Alvarez’ next opponent, with discussions between the two camps reportedly now at an advanced stage.
Charlo is currently undefeated, however has been out of the ring since a 2021 decision win over Juan Macias Montiel, and has also never fought at 168lbs.
