Leading trainer Tony Sims believes Anthony Joshua should step aside to allow an undisputed heavyweight title to take place.
It seemed certain that ‘AJ’ would go straight back into a rematch with Oleksandr Usyk, who beat him last September to take the Brit’s three world titles, but a fight between the Ukrainian and WBC champion Tyson Fury could get in the way of a shot at redemption for the 2012 Olympic Gold
medallist.
Sims, who works with the likes of Conor Benn, John Ryder and Felix Cash, trained Joshua before Robert McCracken came on board and therefore has a good understanding of how the former champion thinks.
Speaking to Boxing Social’s Andi Purewal he suggested that it may be the sensible move to allow Usyk and Fury to fight but he’s not convinced that’s what Joshua would really want.
“I know Anthony personally and I know emotionally how he’d be thinking,” he said. “That defeat he suffered [against Usyk] was a devastating defeat and it was a bit like the [Andy] Ruiz defeat.
He’ll be chomping at the bit to get back in there and reverse that defeat. There will be a lot of money for him to step aside and probably the good move, the sensible move would be to step aside and get a warm-up fight in so you’re mentally ready for Usyk but knowing him he won’t want to do that as a person.”
