A once-highly-rated middleweight champion who fought some of the biggest names in the sport has announced that he is back in training and plans to end his retirement by getting back to action this summer.
American fighter Danny Jacobs debuted as a professional in 2007 but in May 2011 he was diagnosed with a malignant tumour in his back and had to undergo surgery.
He had to take time out form the sport to learn to do to simple things like walk again and despite being told he could never box, he made a full recovery and went back into the ring in October 2012.
He won the WBA title against Jarrod Fletcher on in 2014, had successful defences against Caleb Truax, Sergio Mora, Peter Quillin and Sergio Mora and went on to fight Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez who beat him on points to relieve him of his world title. He also fought the likes of Julio Cesar Chavez Jnr, Gabriel Rosado and John Ryder, who beat him as his last opponent in 2022.
Speaking to IFL TV, he was asked if all the action in Saudi Arabia has got him itching to make a return to the ring.
“Absolutely, what they have done for the sport of boxing is tremendous. I’m a big fan of all of what they have done, I wish I could go to Saudi Arabia to experience what some of my peers have told me have been some of the best shows in boxing that they could possibly have put on.
“I want to be able to feel that, but also just make my return hand have an opportunity to fight somewhere different where new fans can see it.
“We’ve been training for the last few months now, we’re looking for either early or mid-June. Contacts haven’t been signed yet so I can’t really say much but you can look feared to seeing me back soon.”
He was then asked if he will be working with Eddie Hearn and Matchroom again.
“I’m not sure, I can’t quite say.”
He was then asked who he might be going after but wouldn’t be drawn on specific names having previously chased the likes of Jermall Charlo.
“There are still top names in the division in the middleweight, super middleweight or above, I’m at that point now that whatever makes sense for me, that’s where I will go.
“I don’t like to talk about anything that doesn’t have the potential to work out but for me whoever the top guys are that’s my goal, to eventually be world champion again.”
Should he be able to get back in form in quick fashion there are plenty of big fights out there for Jacobs.
