An upset occurred on the undercard of the Tyson Fury versus Oleksandr Usyk fight as Britain lost one of its super-featherweight world champions, who has now revealed a major decision about his boxing future.
Joe Cordina was stopped by Anthony Cacace after he was unable to withstand the relentless attacks from the Belfast fighter.
Since winning the world title in 2022, Cordina has been pursuing major fights, but those plans are now on hold following his loss to Cacace.
Cordina was knocked down in the third round in what some think was controversial fashion after the referee had called break, and the continuous assault from Cacace forced the official to stop the fight in the eighth round.
This defeat, the first of Cordina’s career, is a significant setback as he was aiming for a unification bout later this year.
The fight was a thrilling one for boxing fans, and now Cordina has taken to Instagram to thank his supporters.
“First of all I want to say a massive thank you to everyone that has shown me love in the build-up to the fight, sent me messages beforehand, sent me messages today, and the people who came over to support me, and the people who messaged me I’m sorry I haven’t got back to you but there are so many messages I can’t get back to you all it will take me forever.
“But yeah I want to say a big congratulations to Anthony Cacace he got the job done, new world champion so hats off to him but yeah what can I say.”
He then went on to break down the contest.
“First and second round I felt in control, comfortable, and to be honest after them two rounds I thought it would a comfortable win then after the third round he clipped me when the ref said break and I just didn’t recover.
“Every round after that it was taking little bits out of me, every shot, quite difficult for me to take, bitter pill to swallow, and it’s dented my pride, but I always say to stop me you’ll have to stick me to the floor, he got the job done, it wasn’t my night, I can make no excuses so hats off to him.
Finally he made a big revelation about the future of his career.
“I think it’s time for me to move up to 135 and try my hand at that and see how I get on. All your support means the world to me, I love you all, god bless and I’ll catch up with you soon.”
