Frank Warren has come to the defence of his heavyweight star Tyson Fury and responded to comments about him from Barry McGuigan.
McGugian has claimed that Fury might be in for a rude awakening against Oleksandr Usyk and added that though he is a good fighter, his record doesn’t suggest more than that and also feels that he doesn’t have a great chin and is not the second coming of Muhammad Ali.
These thoughts were put to Warren by BoxNation, and he didn’t take too kindly to them.
“I’m a bit disappointed he said that. What’s a good chin? A good chin is someone who gets up off the floor, they get caught, they go down and get up. You know who didn’t have a great chin? Larry Holmes. See all those fighters who get caught, get put down and don’t get up? They haven’t got great chins. I think Barry got stopped didn’t he, against Cruz, in America.”
He then went on to assess the CV of Fury while many others continue to make their predictions for this fight.
“You look at Tyson, what’s his record? Well he went to Germany and beat the best heavyweight of his generation. Didn’t just beat him, boxed him and took him to school.
“He went to the States, the other guy’s backyard, after his come back, when he had two quick fights, came in quite heavy, quite big, fought a guy who was the hardest punching heavyweight out there for the last 4/50 years, undefeated for six years, won the fight but got a draw and went on to have two great fights with him. I don’t know what he can do, he can only beat the best of his generation.”
He then fired his own shot back at McGuigan’s CV.
“What Tyson done and he will prove it on the 18th when he beats Usyk, he’s beat the best of his generation and that’s not what Barry done, he never fought Azuma Nelson, ’cause I tried to make that fight.
“Barry didn’t make the return with Cruz, ’cause again I tried to make that. He didn’t fight any of those guys, so what Tyson has done is fight everybody, he’s not ducked anyway.”
Should Fury get the win over Usyk, few could argue with Warren on that one, though many would still like to see him fight fellow Brit Anthony Joshua. That fight has been talked about for some time and would be a huge showdown that is as close as ever right now.
