Frank Warren has revealed there are plans afoot for Tyson Fury and Joe Joyce to lock horns in a huge domestic heavyweight dust up this summer.
That is if Fury beats Oleksandr Usyk in an undisputed clash and provided Joyce gets past Zhilei Zhang on April 15 at the Copper Box Arena – two big ‘ifs.’
Speaking in a column on the official Queensberry website, Warren touted Wembley stadium as a potential venue for the two British behemoths to do battle, but admitted Zhang will be look to scupper those plans and catapult himself into the top bracket of the heavyweight division.
“Joe’s WBO Interim world title will be on the line, so it is a golden opportunity for Zhang to gatecrash the heavyweight party and force himself into the reckoning to take on the full champions.”
“Our big hope, of course, is that the Juggernaut remains on a collision course with Tyson Fury and a big summer date at Wembley. That is the plan if Tyson takes all the titles from Oleksandr Usyk and Joe does the business on April 15 in Stratford.”
Although both Joyce and Zhang are regarded as two of the heaviest punchers in the division, the Brit’s incredible engine and seemingly impregnable chin make him a firm favourite in the fight in the eyes of many observers.
Fury knows all too well of ‘The Juggernaut’s capabilities. He was sat ringside for Joyce’s stunning 11th round knockout over the WBC champion’s team mate and close friend, Joseph Parker, at the Manchester Arena last September.
Joyce also gatecrashed a face off between Fury and Oleksandr Usyk at Tottenham Hotspurs’ Stadium in December – a visual representation of the former Olympic silver medalists intentions for what looks set to be a big 2023.
